1 Samuel 10:19

But today you have rejected your God, who saves you from all your calamities and your distresses, and you have said to him, “Set a king over us.” Now therefore present yourselves before the LORD by your tribes and by your thousands.

  1. Ever since sin entered the world through the fall of man, we have been separated from God. We still, in our sin and depravity, desire to hide from God like Adam and Eve did in the garden of Eden.

  2. We strive in our hearts and minds for self-lordship and autonomy; we reject the Lord and His work yet never take responsibility before a holy God. There is nothing we can do to stand before a holy God, for all our actions are like filthy rags.

  3. We long for someone or something to save us and bring us back to that from which our sin has removed us. We attempt to build up man, money, experiences—anything that gives us hope. We reject God and attempt to find joy in what we can do, rather than in who God is and in trusting His perfect goodness.

  4. Yet God, being rich in mercy, gave us the perfect King. He sent His Son to pay the penalty for our sin, that we might be united with God, that we might be a people of God, for God’s own pleasure and our good.

Father, You are good and perfect in all Your ways. Your love is boundless, for I have rejected You and Your Lordship time after time after time. Forgive me. Forgive me for not submitting to or resting in Your love. Grant me hope in being known and loved by You. Help me to do Your will, for Christ’s sake, and for His sake alone. Thank You for Jesus! Amen
