1 Samuel 30:6
But David strengthened himself in the Lord.
Nothing reflects the heart of man more than how we react when difficult situations arise. For those who live according to the flesh set their mind on the things of the flesh. They turn to themselves and turn inward. But those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit.
In this instance, David had returned from battle, and when he arrived to the city where he’d left his family, he found they had been kidnapped along with all the families of those in his army. He was greatly distressed, and the people threatened to stone him because of the horrific circumstances.
However, David did not attempt to justify himself but set his mind on the Lord. He reflected upon the promises of God and strengthened himself on the truths of who God is, rather than defining his circumstances based upon what he saw. He took hold of who God is, the sovereign and holy God, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love and mercy, and acted in accordance with that truth.
In the same way, we must hold fast to the promises of our God in faith and patience and not be sluggish in our affirmation of who God is in all circumstances. For we know that if God is for us, who can be against us? We must draw near to God, knowing with all confidence that He will draw near to us, and that He will lead us and guide us and bring us to victory in accordance with His will.
Romans 8:5, Hebrews 6:12, Romans 8:3, James 4:8
Father, You are strong and mighty. There is nothing that surprises You or deviates from Your plans or Your will. I confess the many times I begin with me rather than beginning with You. I define my circumstances strategically and according to my flesh rather than according to who You are. The pride of my heart wrestles within me to steal Your glory. Forgive me. Humble me with the truth of who You are. May my aim and my strength be defined not by my humanity but by who You are and what You have done through the redemption of Your Son. In Christ’s name I pray. Amen
