Psalm 59:1–2

Deliver me from my enemies, O my God; protect me from those who rise up against me; deliver me from those who work evil, and save me from bloodthirsty men.

  1. Where our hearts go when the Lord ordains trials and temptations reflects our hearts and that which they worship. We must ask ourselves, “When we are delivered over to our enemies, do we seek God or do we seek what is wise in our own eyes?”

  2. We see in this instance that David immediately stopped and asked the Lord to protect him from his enemies. He asked Him to deliver him from those who “work evil” and to save him from “bloodthirsty men.” David thought not only of the circumstances but of specific people who sought to destroy his life.

  3. We must be mindful of our own view of God, for everything we think, say, and do is in direct reflection of where our hearts rest in who God is and who we are. Do we view Him as Lord over all in which we live and move and have our being, where not even a sparrow falls from the sky unless He ordains it? Does He work all things for His glory? Does He know our inmost thoughts, and is He aware of the words in our hearts before they even come out of our mouths?

  4. We must look to Christ, who looked to the Father and said, “My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.” For He knew what was coming and who was coming; but He looked to the Father and prayed and sought God’s will in all things. We must, as well be specific in our trials, lay them before the Lord, trust that He will work, and rest in knowing that whatever He ordains is right.

Acts 17:28, Matthew 10:29–31, Psalm 139:4, Matthew 26:39

Father, You are Lord. There is none who can stand before You, none who can defeat You, none who can compare to You. I confess that in the trials and the turmoil, many times I attempt to act wise in my own eyes rather than seek You. I worry and fret because the depravity of my unbelief in Your goodness overwhelms me. Forgive me. Allow me to see Your might. Go before me and help me to think of Your working, of Your glory, of Your beauty, and Your goodness in Christ. Incline my heart to seek and rest in You for the sake of Christ. Amen
